In spite of my huge disappointment (to follow) I still enthusiastically recommend this book for all who love to embroider. The designs are stunning and beautifully photographed and the clear instructions enable even a fairly inexperienced embroiderer to succeed. Simple projects accompany each design, also very appealing and quick to complete, again with excellent instructions. However, the patterns are printed so close to the binding they cannot be fully accessed even when forcing the book to open flat. In desperation I resorted to removing the pattern pages using a scalpel. Even then, portions of some designs were lost in the binding. If a spiral bound format is available that would be the perfect solution. The book otherwise deserves a 5 star rating for sure.

The patterns in this book are simplicity at its best! Beautiful, simple, creative and classy designs on every single page.As I type, I'm embroidering six of the herbs from the herb garden onto colorful flour sack towels (purchased here on Amazon) and they are just gorgeous. One herb per towel. I did have to revise the number of floss strands because 6 was just too bulky on the back of the towels. I mostly used 2 strands, sometimes 3 strands. I also used a different color of floss...closer to a Thyme green. They turned out just lovely!After I finish these, I'm doing Flower Silhouette (page 24) on pillowcases and can't wait! They're so pretty!If you love to embroider and you want something new and different, this book is for you.

If you're a know-nothing beginner to embroidery the how-to is a bit lacking. The instructional photos for stitch types are a bit small and the advice for best results is a bit brief. However, there are AMAZING resources online, and I bet most people are buying the book for the patterns, and not for an exhaustive how-to. If you want to get into embroidery you'll do fine with this book and a couple google searches.The patterns are excellent. Its hard to find simple and modern embroidery patterns, and the finished objects are really good... I think the only item (out of MANY options) that doesn't resonate with me is a hanger cover.Very pleased with this purchase.

This book marked the beginning of my embroidery obsession. All the designs are well made and balanced, and many of the elements are separate so you can use individual parts to make up your own design. To date I've made the tree throw pillow, and I've used the bird and tree pattern as well as the pineapple pattern. The author uses only a handful of stitches, with clear images and instructions on how to make them, which was helpful for me, especially at the beginning. If you're contemplating a step into embroidery, please don't hesitate and buy this book. It's great for beginners and experienced people alike!

Yumiko Higuchi is one of the most talented embroidery designers. Since I reside in North America, I bought this edition (not the one sold in Japan).No problem about it though. Just beautiful...

This book is a keeper for its beautifully artistic designs. As I easily feel cluttered, designs that use simplicity to showcase color combinations and subtleties of shape are a breath of fresh air. Higuchi's style allows one design to be the center point so that it can be fully appreciated, which is a nice contrast to the type of embroidery designs I usually see in craft stores.I found these patterns easy to replicate (and cheap!) despite being a beginner. It was also obvious that my first attempt did not live up to the pictures, but they were inspiring enough to keep me going and I quickly noticed improvement. There are only 8 types of stitches used in this book, which contributed to ease of learning. I thought the repetition of the same stitch over and over in a pattern quite lovely.All of the small sewing projects that showcase these patterns were things I would make to gift or use. One thing I greatly appreciate is that each pattern is made up of several smaller pieces. That way you can choose how much time you want to spend embroidering and do, say, one flower or a whole collection. They are also easily replicated on household items you would like to personalize (tea towel, canvas shoes, tote ect.), even if you don't want to do the small sewing projects.*Review copy courtesy of Roost Books*
