About the Author

Since graduating from the Glasgow School of Art in 1990 with a BA (Hons) degree in Design specialising in printed textiles, Moy Mackay has gone on to develop an innovative felting style using merino fleece fibres in the same way that a painter uses brushstrokes, then embellishing them with machine and hand embroidery. She has exhibited her work at numerous exhibitions throughout the UK and also in the US, and she has built up a steadily increasing fan base. Moy works from Wasps Artists Studios in Selkirk as well as running The Moy Mackay Gallery in Peebles. Since her first book Art in Felt & Stitch was published in April 2012, Moys work has gained worldwide exposure and she now teaches classes both at home and abroad. Since learning to needle felt I have wanted to take it to the next level.This book takes me to that next level and far beyond.Moy gives you everything you need to make the most amazingfelted pictures.She uses everything from needle felting, wet felting & sewingto create the most amazing pictures.She takes you through step-by-stepeach of the techniquesso that you'll be able to create each of the pictures in the book.She also gives you all this knowledge so that you can create your own.I love the pictures that you can create.They look amazing!I haven't used some of the techniques in the bookbut after reading the instructions I feel confidentthat I will be able to perform them.Moy's use of colours is amazing.I can't wait to try her colour mixes.I feel they will give me more confidence to usemore colours in my own projects.I can't believe the amazing looks she gets from her techniques in this book.I've already ordered the items I'll need to make my first picture.I just hope I can do justice to her amazing book.I received the book to review, however all opinions expressed are my own. No monies were received.

What a beautiful book...the work depicted in it is breathtaking and those photos make it worth buying even without any instructions. I'd love to see these in person. I reluctantly took off one star as I was somewhat disappointed to see that there's a good bit of wet felting involved which I don't have the supplies or space (or interest) to do, but there are plenty of needlefelting and embellishing techniques as well. Very inspirational!

I consider myself an intermediate level felt-maker and have been looking about for books and information to take myself to the next level as I become more serious about my art/craft in accordance to what attracts me and inspires me. In this case, I have found that I am more interested in "painterly" pieces of felt, rather than things like slippers, vessels or nuno felt-making. I stumbled upon this book and thank goodness for the "look inside" opportunity. One glance and I knew this was the book for me.If you are looking for a very detailed guide to wet-felting or needle-felting or embellishments, you should probably get another more comprehensive yet basic book than this as a supplement. There are several good ones available through Amazon,again with the "look inside" feature. If you aren't yet ready to splurge, try to find the books which interest you at the library (a fantastic resource) to see if the book has the content and information you need, presented in a way that works for you.I think this book is more suited to someone with some felt-making experience (though not absolutely: this is a visual feast for the eyes and just fun to look through)who is looking to expand one's skills in this direction: towards pictorial felt compositions. I love watercolor painting as a medium and dabble a bit but I find it very challenging. Felting has been an unexpected blessing to me--not that it is "easier" than painting, but that its dimensional and tactile nature is more exciting and rewarding to me.I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves beautiful textiles, with that one small caveat: it is not a "how to make felt" basic book though there is instruction. To me this is more an idea book and one to ignite inspiration. Gorgeous.

I have been experimenting with various felting techniques over the last year and realized that what I wanted to be able to do was" paint with the fiber".Well this book is certainly proof that it can be done and boy does Moy Mac Kay do it well. While the more formal subject matter of Moys works are not what I am interested in per say, they are absolutely beautiful. Her use of color is spectacular . Every project is explained in detail and more importantly photographed in full AND up close to be able to see how she creates fine details in the finished works. She takes you through the felting process and then the refining processes using needle felting and machine stitching and finally hand stitching. I am very happy indeed that I bought this beautiful book. It contains wonderful works made by the artist, using colour and texture to create impressionist works of landscapes, nature and still lives. It also has detailed projects with excellent instructions and stage by stage photos, so that you can learn to make similar small works. Moy Mackay shows not only how to make up the felt art, mainly wet felting but also needle felting, but how to embellish it with stitching both by machine and by hand.This is a book to drool over and to use as a practical guide. A quality product in all senses.

This is an exquisite book by a fine textile artist. It's my third book on felting and I finally hit the jackpot with this one. The techniques are presented in step-by step photos and are a world ahead of the beginner books; the artist shows in-depth knowledge of color, blending and contrast that would be applicable to fine painting.While I'm not at all sure I have the skill to produce anything near the caliber presented here, I'm on fire to try! I don't want to copy any of the projects presented, and I'm sure that's not the purpose of the author. But the techniques and effects are something I can use as a starting point to create my own fiber arts. (And if not, I can still enjoy the art works presented here!)

Oh my heavenly days, Moy McKay's work is gorgeous. As a beginning felter myself, I revel in her work, her attention to detail, and her use of color. Her technique is so unique that she is being very generous sharing it here. The book is very high quality, on sturdy glossy paper - it feels like a coffee table art book. But it also contains step by step instructions for felting projects that are beautifully photographed. I have it on my work table and refer to it every day.
