If you were there, or were listening, or are still there and listening, this book will put a smile on your face; Page after page of quality, colorful pictures and highly amusing quotes by some of the biggest bands of the era; The only thing I wished was that it included more pictures, esp. since there is a huge list at the end of the book w/80's artists not pictured at all, and their one big song. This would include bands like Badlands, Helix, Shotgun Messiah, and Smashed Gladys....To think this book could have been twice the size only makes me think of things that could have been...But this is no skimpy collection; A great book at a great price, LOTS of pics suitable for framing if you were so inclined...And if you weren't ever into metal, there's still plenty to make fun of.Man, did I really used to dress like that?

This is a nice, rudimentary snapshot of the genre of music that was the soundtrack to my childhood and early adolescence. I am 31 so I remember the days when MTV actually played videos, and from about 83 to 91 they played a lot of hard rock.The book is light on actual content but heavy on excellent photos. Not a bad read, i read it in about an hour.

Great pictures in this book- it is more artsy, like a coffee table book. Loved it! Another good book on hair bands is The Sunset Strip Diaries by Amy Asbury and also Hollywood Rocks!

I purchased this as a research book for work. Not only are the quality and price great, but this book is really well put together.Every band from the era is represented, and then some. Nothing is missed. Great photos and hysterical quotes. Out of all of the books I have bought recently for work, this has been by far the most popular and entertaining.

This book is full of sweet pictures, I mean it takes me back to when I had my room covered in posters, thousands of staples holes in my walls, Dad always yelling at me for it. Theres information on all the bands, bands you loved, bands who were huge, bands with a one-hit wonder. Theres even some bands you might not of even heard of. This book is a must-have for any die-hard '80's fan. Its rather cheap, plus its has all that useless knowledge and facts, that we crave for. I highly recommend it, you won't be disappointed.

If you are a child of the 80's like I am, you will love this book!! It brought back a lot of good memories! There were some truly awesome bands that came out of the 80's. I think you will enjoy this book!

Great pictures, awesome book.

The early 21st Century is a time of great austerity in Western culture. As of this writing in early 2013, free expression takes a backseat to inoffensiveness, hedonism is frowned upon, and political correctness has morphed into a full-blown religion. However, these puritanical mores weren't always valued in our society. As recently as the 1980s, decadence, excess, flamboyance, and iconoclastic thought were prized commodities in Western culture, and nothing exemplifies this better than the hair metal movement. Hair metal was more than a style of music. It was a lifestyle built on a foundation of lust, lacerating guitar licks, and loads of mousse. Steven Blush's "American Hair Metal" does a brilliant job of paying homage to this decadent genre of pomp, personality, and politically incorrect partying.Just as the oeuvre of hair metal bands was long on soaring guitar solos and short on philosophically introspective lyrics, Blush's book takes a minimalist approach to rhapsodizing about the AquaNet kings. Most of the book is made up of glossy pictures of hair metal heroes and the horny groupies who worshiped them. From a design standpoint, this layout strategy was a wise decision. The flamboyant visual imagery of bands like Cinderella, Motley Crue, and Poison tells the story of hair metal much more effectively than long-winded descriptions ever could. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a glossy snapshot of Nikki Sixx circa 1987 is worth a googleplex of sermons. However, the text that is contained in the book is right on the money. Blush's writing nails the reasons why hair metal was so appealing during its heyday and why the genre went into rapid decline in the early 1990s. For me, the most surprising part about "American Hair Metal" was the humor contained in its pages. Blush's book is a serious tribute to the hair metal genre, but it never loses sight of the comical aspects of the music, styles, and personalities involved. The "Gayly Yours" fan letter to Stephen Pearcy of Ratt was particularly hilarious!Pop culture has changed substantially in the last twenty-five years. In many ways, we've become a feminized society. Today, feelings matter more than pragmatism, sensitivity trumps machismo, and paranoia about racism and sexism has become our collective zeitgeist. However, in the '80s, we were too concerned about having a good time to waste our lives wallowing in neurosis, wringing our hands about whether groupies were objectified, or wondering if song lyrics did enough to promote multicultural diversity. The '80s were about fun without guilt, and the genuine, big-haired smiles I remember on both men and women back then were a stark contrast to the cynical smirks, forced politeness, and hyper-sensitive egos of today.The bottom line: The 1980s were an amazing decade. If you grew up watching MTV and/or banging your head to hair metal during the Reagan era, then I guarantee that "American Hair Metal" will be a great trip down Memory Lane for you.
