Jenny McGlothlin, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC is a speech-language pathologist who has spent two decades helping clients from birth to young adulthood heal their relationship with food. McGlothlin is also a feeding therapist, speaker, researcher, and author who loves food and being a sports mom to three kids. Katja Rowell, MD, is a family doctor and relational feeding specialist. She believes helping children and adults have a good relationship with food is preventive medicine. This is a very nice, step by step approach to help picky eaters work on looking at and resolving some of their issues around eating.I only gave it 4 stars because I was hoping for more hands on activities with foods themselves, not just exploring why there is a problem in the first place. Not the fault of the book, just didn't meet my expectations (oh to be able to resolve these things in a step-by-step evidence based protocol! - which is out there for younger ones, but this is the first I have seen for teens and adults!)
As a dietitian specializing in Eating Disorders, I was thrilled when this book came out. Jenny McGlothlin and Katja Rowell offer clinically sound and thorough information in small readable chapters with a compassionate and validating stance. This workbook is must for any teen/adult who has lived with picky eating, selective eating, or Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder!

Great resource
I am a pediatric feeding therapist and appreciate this book! Jenny McGloughlin and Katya Rowell have put together a tremendous resource for this population of older extremely picky and worried eaters. There are a number of resources for infants and young children, but this resources is unique as the authors fully understand the complicated mealtime issues that cause struggle for this older teenage population. These issues are real, emotional, and can be social devastating for these teens and their families. These authors GET IT and their understanding and constructive, positive strategies will be a gift to these families. Thank you to Jenny and Katya!
I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of Conquer Picky Eating. Katja Rowell and Jenny McGlothlin's fantastic earlier book on picky eating, Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating, joined a large roster of books on the topic for young children (and I feel it is the absolutely the best of that bunch). Yet there has been nothing of the sort for teens and adults. Since Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) became an official eating disorder diagnosis in 2013, many have come to recognize that their eating struggles are significant enough to be “worthy†of help. Eating disorder clinics have experienced an influx of ARFID patients-- children, adolescents and adults. Clinicians may have neither training nor tools to work with this diagnosis, especially in teens and adults, which has left the eating disorder treatment world scrambling a bit. This workbook can be used with a clinician, eating disorder specialist or not (and it is a marvelous teaching resource for therapists, dietitians, occupational therapists and speech/language pathologists). However, the great news is that many teens and adults who struggle, including those who would not officially meet the criteria for an ARFID diagnosis but are simply ready to branch out with their eating, could actually do quite well on their own with the right guidebook and this book is finally here: Conquer Picky Eating truly stands alone as a responsible and extremely useful self-help guide. This groundbreaking book starts by reassuring picky eaters that there is nothing to be ashamed of--and it's never too late to embark upon change. The authors sensitively address the complex issues that may have led to persistent picky eating, including everything from inborn cautiousness with flavors and textures, to how readers may have been fed as children by well-meaning caregivers, to traumatic eating experiences. Both the written exercises and eating experiments are thoughtful, creative, systematic, and progressive, with the goals being decreased fear of new foods and social eating situations, a methodology for how to try new foods, new skills for politely dealing with “food pushers,†a larger repertoire of accepted food and confidence in knowing that each person ultimately has the right to determine how and what she or he will eat—and that it is just as okay to be a cautiously competent eater as it is to be an adventurous foodie at the end of this journey.
