Nile Rodgers had a complicated, rewarding, and a see-saw-like music production career. And he details that career in Le Freak, which is one of the best autobiographies or biographies you'll ever read.In Le Freak, Rodgers wasn't interested in giving the reader an uptight and basic view of his music career and his private life. Within this book Rodgers wanted to shock and awe you, he wanted to give you advice on beating drug addiction, and so much more. One of the main things I enjoyed about this book, was the background stories on musicians he worked with. The fly on the wall-like stories he told in this book on Billy Idol, Madonna, and David Bowie were something else.In conclusion, I was glad that I brought this book which enabled me to get more perspective on Chic's rise and fall, the disrespect shown to Disco music during the late 1970s and early 1980s, and the 1980s period of Madonna's career.
I grew up in the 80s, and I have to admit I had some prejudice against what is generally called "Disco Music". As I started reading this book and understanding the kind of hard work, thought, and musical expertise that went into the making of hits such as "Everybody Dance" and "Le Freak", I listened again to them and several more with an open mind, and that did it for me. That is indeed great music, worth listening to, and feeling good to.Nile Rodgers life's tale is full of exciting things going on and surreal encounters with music legends, and this, combined with fluid and honest writing, makes this book a page turner. From a chance encounter with Tim Leary, Diana Ross watching from the wings, David Bowie alone in a bar, Michael Jackson making confessions, and Madonna, well, being Madonna... you can't wait to see what will happen next. His story of almost dying several times due to drug abuse, and finally overcoming addiction successfully and permanently is truly inspiring. The absurd coincidence of being saved by hitting the wrong elevator button seems to me as no coincidence at all... as a Spiritist, I'm pretty sure his friends on the "other side" helped him avoid prematurely ending his present life. But since this does not come for free, I guess they already knew that besides bringing joy to the world through music, he would still do charity work, as it indeed turned out to be.This book will delight every music lover. Guaranteed.
An excellent book by an interesting and very intelligent guy. Nile Rogers takes music seriously, but is personally as far away from pretentious as is imaginable. A man with great musical skill, terrific instincts and a fascinating story to tell. Personally, I was among the "Death to Disco" crowd but it is simply impossible not to respect Nile Rogers if you love music, appreciate talent and value passion. What really struck me was that both Roxy Music and KISS (of all bands) strongly influenced Nile's vision for his band CHIC. Although he says he was awkward and insecure at times he has led an enviably glamorous life. And although blessed with truly remarkable talents, he is generous with his praise of others.I have ready many "rock star" bios and have enjoyed them very much, but it must be said that this book is probably the best written of them all. Nile's voice comes through the words on the page as if he's telling you his story over a beer on the patio. I'd like to shake his hand someday.
Niles has an incredible life story. His story is told with brutally honesty. I was particularly impressed w/his objective and totally honest acknowledgement of how others in the music world viewed his talent and work, the price he paid to break out his "shell" and his humble disposition when he did not receive the credit he so justly deserved. However, it was this same humility that paved the way to his hard fought success and his generosity via his charitable organization. I have new found respect for Nile. His tale is one of inspiration, humor, humility and perseverance.
Nile's book was an insightful anmd fascinating read. It was clearly written in his own words and I found that both refreshing and a welcomed change to the traditional co-author/ghost writer inclusion. Although I felt he was spending far too much time discussing his childhood, I realized after finishing the book that this part of his life is was essential for me to better get an understanding of who Nile Rodgers was and what he has become as a result of all he had to endure.I wished he would have spent a little more time discussing the "We Are Family" recording sessions and why the Sledge Sisters had such a hard time adjusting to Nile and Bernards'insistance on doing things their way. According to the linear notes of We Are Family, the Sledge sisters were nowhere to be found as a unit on this project..all background vocals had been pre-recorded by the Chic Singers...why?That aside, I found his stories of working with Diana, Madonna, David Bowie and a host of others very entertaining. I would recommend this book to anyone who, like myself was a child of the Disco era and especially those with a little more age who were on the dance floor grooving to the production stylings of this musical genius. We're all praying for you Nile..stay strong!!!
I have seen as many interviews as possible about Nile. Every single anecdote he always talks about are In the book highly detailed. I had previously read Anthony Kiedis' Scar Tissue and I have to say that these people had more life experiences at 13 that I have myself with 26 years old. The book is as groovy as his music.PS: I didn't know the book was released before his Daft Punk collaboration. It would have been great to hear some detailed stories about that legendary encounter.
